For his 17th birthday, his parents surprised him with his first puppy, Gabby. Over the next ten months, Cody trained under the mentorship of Brad Arrington and Hall of Fame trainer Hugh Arthur, refining his skills in advanced retriever training and kennel management. He soon began operating the company's AKC Field Trial division alongside Bill Arthur. During the following four years, Cody and Bill achieved remarkable success, placing more than 45 dogs on the AKC National Derby List and producing 40 AKC Qualified All-Age (QAA) dogs. Cody quickly earned recognition as one of the nation's premier minor-stakes field trial trainers. Among his many accomplishments, he trained and handled Oldsquaws Little Rascal, who became the 2018 High Point Derby Dog with 69 points and captured the prestigious Purina Award. After five successful years with Mossy Pond Retrievers and fulfilling his contractual commitments, Cody made the decision to return to his roots.
